Kindergarten students learned about primary colors and mixing colors to form secondary colors!
Students created color wheels, squished ink blot style paintings, and mixed paint to create blots of range, purple, and green! When the paint finally dried, we drew on our ink blots using our imaginations and created these yummy collages by utilizing shape and pattern! Enjoy! I was given a broken first generation 3D printer- so my husband and I fixed it and now the Collegium 150 building is learning computer coding and computer aided design! Students are using AutoDesk programs to support STEM and STEAM learning. They have made some beautiful designs, while learning about the practical implications of this exciting technology! The CCS Art Department was honored to participate in Mr. Winter's Retirement Gala in June! Enjoy some of the shots of our talented students' work, from K-12! If you missed me at Back to School Night, don't worry! Here is a link to our full presentation (this is a Prezi presentation). Here is also a handout on the K-1 art curriculum and some basic information regarding Art Department events. Thanks for checking and please contact me with any questions! We love shapes in Kindergarten. And drawing. And writing. We love identifying and naming objects, using materials safely, and learning routines, expectations, and procedures. And most of all, we love Mr. Paintbrush. Students discuss and identify different shapes, draw shapes, discuss multiple scales of shapes (medium,. large, small), and use a crayon resist technique with paint. We then learn to paint nicely with tempera blocks and watercolor bristle brushes, and we learn to put away our own paintings on a Art drying rack. Check out some of our paintings! Hello to my new and returning young friends and parents! Welcome to (or back to) the CCS art program and to school! I am looking forward to a new year full of engaging art-making and curriculum, special arts events at CCS, and of course, getting to know all my new and returning students! CCS strives to be a supportive environment for the arts and for educating well-rounded children! Kindergarten and first grade classes have art once a cycle (every six days) for one hour. Kindergarten's first unit is titled "Making My Art" and focuses on the enduring idea of how young artists can safely use and experiment with a variety of new materials to create unique artworks. First grade's first unit is titled "What Makes Me, Me?" and focuses on the enduring idea of Identity and concepts of self esteem and how artists can portray identity. I suggest sending your student to school with a smock (big, old tee-shirts really are best for this purpose), with their name written on the front of the smock to make passing shirts out faster (this gets us making art sooner!). There really is no need to purchase a fancy, expensive smock. I'll be posting projects and information about special projects and Art Department events here, and volunteer or donation opportunities. Please contact me with any questions you may have! Looking forward to another great year in creativity, Mrs. Teodecki A short, interesting video about the importance of art in students' lives: As part of our collaborative art unit, first graders create collaborative murals. First, we discuss what murals ARE, and then, we talk about basic shapes, radial designs, and sharing our art. Circle painting is a really popular things for adults and colleges to do, and we learned about it here: Students then tried our own, on large banner paper with block tempera paints. We practiced sharing ideas, being polite, and taking turns as leaders. Check out the results!
It's not a recent art project... but it's worth writing about, so here we go. I haven't been at CCS for a week because I've been at a national conference for art teachers, presenting on cyberbullying prevention from a visual culture perspective (visual culture is the world we live in, filled with images, advertisements, product design, and contemporary images, including digital media). I've also learned a lot, including some curriculum implications on the Common Core, some new standards in art education, and a lot of ideas for our new STEAM center. I've met some amazing people, and there was literally not enough time in the day for every piece of development and learning. I am really serious and inspired, to start getting new media in the Art Department- and I'm looking at iPads. so I'm putting a call out. I'm going to take donations, I'm going to try to buy older generation refurbished iPads, I'm going to write grants. If and CCS community and parents have ideas or the ability to support our school and Art Department to upgrade our technology to teach new media standards, please send me any information you have at [email protected] Just an example of one of the cool things we can do with new media technology!
First grade students are in a unit about folk art around the world. We began our unit by learning about Folk Art Suns created by the Nahua Natives in Mexico, we found Mexico on a map, and we discussed Mexican history. Students learn about folk art, traditional beliefs and cultures, and utilize facial expressions and feelings when discussing sun art and aesthetics. We also learn about the history of sun art in Mexico, including the Sun Stone and calenders, some background on which can be found on the shared teaching Prezi below: Students use fine motor skills and learn more about ceramic art, clay processes and slab building when creating a slab-based sun out of red, or terra cotta clay. We then us glazes and underglazes to decorate our suns with polka dots, stripes, flowers, and other designs (some Nahua Indians use the suns to celebrate changes in their lives or things they are proud of in their community). Enjoy our first grade sun slideshow. |
